This year’s street rod, furnished by Brookville Roadster, is a ‘32 Three Window Coupe.. It will be presented to a lucky registered participant of the 40th Annual Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky.
If you have been involved in this hobby for even a short time, the names Brookville Roadster and NSRA should be very familiar. Brookville was the first company to manufacture complete reproduction all-stell early Ford bodies after many years of producing steel body patch panels, fenders and other replacement components. When it came time to build the 40th Anniversary Street Rod Nationals Top Participant Prize, it was natural for NSRA and Brookville to collaborate on the project.
The 2009 Top Participant Prize will be awarded during the 40th Annual NSRA Street Rod Nationals held at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky. To be eligible to win this fabulous prize, you must be a registered participant of the 2009, 40th Annual NSRA Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky, present at the time and place of the drawing, and with your street rod on the grounds… the Kentucky Exposition Center. The drawing will take place Saturday afternoon, and the decisions of the NSRA in determining the winner will be final. For more information on winning this great prize, contact the National Street Rod Association, 4030 Park Ave., Memphis, TN 38111, or phone 901-452-4030.

Among the many benefits of being a member of the National Street Rod Association® (NSRA) is the free subscription to StreetScene® Magazine, the NSRA’s members only, full color monthly publication. The magazine is mailed direct to the members each month, and is not available on newsstands.
StreetScene Magazine, now well into its third decade of continuous publication, has long been considered one of the best information sources in the hobby. With shorter lead times than other publications of its quality, the news, coming events listings and cars and parts for sale sections are as up-to-the-minute as is possible. Because of the timeliness of publication, all of the various departments are extremely popular and therefore the best in the hobby. StreetScene’s cars and parts for sale, trade or wanted sections are unrivaled, and the members are able to use the service for two free ads (there is a minimal fee for photos) in each monthly issue. The coming events section lists every automotive type activity imaginable from local swap meets, car shows and cruise nights to the NSRA Nationals and other large events across the country.
In addition to the direct member service monthly departments, there are editorials, letters to the editor and a safety column, news of the NSRA National events and the street rod industry, a place for members to show their vehicles, and coverage of more than 100 activities from around the world each year. StreetScene has monthly full color features of members’ vehicles. This new addition is receiving acclaim from the readers, and is a “regular feature” status. The magazine has display advertising from the leaders in specialty parts and accessories, and according to a recent reader survey, StreetScene Magazine is among the most thoroughly read publications in most enthusiasts’ homes. NSRA members feel StreetScene Magazine itself is more than worth the annual membership fee.
For more information on StreetScene Magazine and membership in the National Street Rod Association, contact: NSRA, 4030 Park Ave., Memphis, TN 38111, or phone 901-452-4030.

The specialty vehicles NSRA members own are built to be driven on the streets and highways. They are used to transport people, often to far off locales for recreational enjoyment. The National Street Rod Association® is dedicated to vehicle safety and backs it up with a program that gives every owner the opportunity to have his/her vehicle safety inspected for free as often as they want with a strong emphasis on having it done at least once each year.
The NSRA Vehicle Safety Inspection Program is completely voluntary, and includes 23 different items ranging from the lighting system to suspension (see list that follows), and the sole purpose of the safety inspection is to advise the vehicle owner of problem areas, either real or potential. As an "advisory" type inspection, it is only used to call the owner's attention to something which may have been overlooked. The inspection is not mandatory and has no effect on entering or taking part in NSRA events.
Even though this program is totally voluntary, the number of vehicles inspected grows every year. The NSRA Vehicle Safety Inspection is offered at each of the thirteen annual NSRA events, and at hundreds of independently produced activities all across the country. The program has become so popular, in fact, that each spring there is a growing number of "Safety Runs" where the main theme is only the Safety Inspection to make sure the vehicles are ready for another season of trouble free, safe fun.
While more and more specialty vehicle owners recognize the benefits of having their vehicles safety inspected every year, there is one group of them that is even more keenly aware of the program's value; the guys and gals that make up the all volunteer NSRA Safety Inspection Teams. There is one of these teams in every state, and in areas where the number of enthusiasts is more heavily concentrated there are additional teams so that as many of them as possible will have the opportunity to take advantage of the safety teams’ services and expertise.
These Safety Inspection Teams are providing a very worthwhile service for the National Street Rod Association, but what they are offering for free to the individual enthusiast is much more important...an extra set of eyes to notice a potentially life threatening condition before it becomes more of one. There are approximately 800 people involved in making the NSRA Vehicle Safety Inspection Program work, and they are do more than just talk about vehicle safety...they make it a reality!
Considering the number of miles street rodders accumulate year after year on their street rods, this is a very safe hobby. With the emphasis NSRA puts on safety combined with the care street rodders put into their vehicles when constructing and maintaining them and the services provided by the NSRA Safety Inspection Teams, there is every reason to believe it will remain a safe hobby well into the future.
While attending an NSRA National event, take a few minutes to visit the Safety Inspection Area and learn a little more about this great program first hand...take the time to have your vehicle safety inspected...or simply note the number of NSRA Safety Inspection Verification Stickers on the windshields of the vehicles you look at. Vehicle safety is an important part of our hobby and most all enthusiasts recognize that fact and are doing something to prove it... they are having their vehicle safety inspected every year.

About the NSRA
The National Street Rod Association’s great slogan is “Fun With Cars.” And it’s really that simple.
We are heavily involved in the specialty automotive vehicle participant sport, from the people that enjoy participating with their vehicles to the industry that has evolved from within. NSRA is the organizing body that made the sport what it is today, and it is the reason the growth of enthusiast participation has continued at a steady pace since the association was founded in 1970. NSRA provides leadership, guidance, and fun events for enthusiasts who favor driving their specialty vehicles wherever and whenever they want to.
Valuable Services for Our Members
The National Street Rod Association produces thirteen of the world’s biggest and best specialty vehicle events, and provides valuable services to its membership. A main benefit is the monthly publication, StreetScene Magazine, which is mailed directly to each member’s home. StreetScene provides many services only available to the membership. NSRA has a network of state representatives, all enthusiasts, to assist on a local level, and a unique, highly respected, nationwide voluntary Vehicle Safety Inspection program which is applauded by both state and national legislators.
Events and Activities for the Whole Family
The fun part of NSRA comes in the form of activities. The premier event in the sport is the NSRA Street Rod Nationals®, the world’s largest automotive participant event, and it is supplemented with twelve Divisional Nationals to bring the NSRA type of activity to even more parts of the U.S. The NSRA events are a combination of games, activities, mini-events and manufacturers selling trade shows, and every event is geared to family entertainment.
What is a Street Rod?
At no time in history have Americans been as interested in specialty automobiles as they are today. Be it a rebuilt old car or a newly constructed, limited production, special interest vehicle, this is the era of the unique to anyone interested in automobiles.
One of the fastest growing groups of enthusiasts interested in the older cars are street rodders; the owners and builders of street rods. A street rod is the most practical type of old car. By definition a street rod is: An automobile of 1948 or earlier manufacture which has undergone some type of modernization, to include any of the following; engine, transmission, interior refinements, and any other modifications the builder desires. A street rod is to be driven to events under its own power and is to be used as a safe, non-racing vehicle for total family enjoyment.
In addition, a street rod is a means of self expression for the creator. The builder of a street rod is not confined to guidelines set down by someone else...he can be his own man, and the street rod can be whatever he wants it to be, as long as the basic vehicle was manufactured prior to 1949. The street rod builder has the option of adding a late model engine and drive train from any make of car, he can modify the suspension to give better ride and handling characteristics, and he can incorporate whatever creature comforts he wants. Air conditioning, cruise control, AM-FM stereo radios and CD players, power steering and brakes, and automatic transmissions are common. The end result is an automobile tailored to the owner’s wants, and yet it is a car that has the looks and charm of a vehicle 50, 60 or even 70 years old. And, as the builder has options when it comes to adding the type of equipment he wants, he can also use as mild or as wild a paint theme as he cares to, or he can modify the lines of the body to suit his own design. The sky is the limit, and he can do whatever he wants without worrying about standards set down by someone else.
One of the best parts of owning a street rod, however, is not in the creating of a unique vehicle, but in its enjoyment after it is completed. With the modernization comes the ability to enjoy the vehicle in ways other resurrected old cars can not be. The vehicle can be driven for long distances in comfort, with safety to the passengers and others on the highway. In addition to making the car more comfortable, improvements in steering, lighting and brakes are nearly always included in the building of a street rod.
A street rod is a nostalgia trip, and while it retains most of the appeal of an old car, it still permits self expression by allowing the creator to incorporate his own ideas in paint, body work and the mechanics that make it go. In this era of special interest automobiles, the street rod is one of the truest forms of personalized vehicles.

The members of the National Street Rod Association® (NSRA) are fortunate to have Sneed Insurance Company in their corner when it comes to all types of insurance coverage for their vehicles. At a time when it was next to impossible to insure a specialty vehicle, the concerned folks at Sneed Insurance worked with officials of the NSRA to create the type of coverage those involved in the hobby needed to continue enjoying their vehicles in the manner for which they were built, while having the peace of mind that should a loss occur it was covered.
Creating a specialty vehicle insurance program was not an easy task, but the Sneed Insurance staff persisted, and after a brief trial period in selected states, the program went national in 1980. At that time liability coverage was not available, but over the years the program has advanced in many ways, including the availability of a full coverage (comprehensive and liability) policy.
Sneed Insurance Company can be reached by calling 800/619-7827, or write: Sneed Insurance, Sneed Building, 6645 Stage Road, Memphis, TN 38134, www.sneedinsurance.com.
Early in January each year, the members of the National Street Rod Association® (NSRA) are given the opportunity to have their name and phone number listed in the NSRA Fellow Pages so that should fellow rodders be in his or her neighborhood and need assistance, they will have someone they know will come to their aid as close as the nearest telephone. That’s why the NSRA Fellow Pages work, and that’s why it works so well...it’s rodders helping rodders, and that’s a proven, unbeatable formula.
NSRA prints a completely new Fellow Pages each year, and it is mailed free to all of the members, as one of the member benefits. Every edition is totally new, not one name or phone number from a previous year’s “pages” is picked up. In this way, only those who care to participate do, and Fellow Pages users are assured that they are calling on someone that is willing to help and that phone numbers listed are as current as possible.
As in past years, the all new NSRA Fellow Pages will be mailed to each and every member in the early part of the rodding season, and will be more than just a handy reference guide to those that have volunteered their help to a fellow rodder in need. All of the NSRA field force personnel (Directors, State Reps and Safety Inspectors) are listed, along with a complete outline of the NSRA Vehicle Safety Inspection requirements, making each new Fellow Pages Booklet a valuable traveling companion and all around guide...it continues to be something to have in the street rod at all times.

The National Street Rod Association was among the first to recognize the presence of a contingent of enthusiasts that didn’t fit the presumed mold of “street rodder” when in 1986 the first ever Under 21 Show was held at the Street Rod Nationals in Oklahoma City. The show was a complete success with 48 vehicles on display, and it inspired the program to be picked up for all of the NSRA produced events.
Over the past 18 years, the NSRA Under 21 Program, sponsored by Vintage Air of San Antonio, Texas, has served to acknowledge the participation of hundreds of young street rod owners, and the concept has been copied, in modified forms, by organizations big and small, as well as by magazines such as Street Rodder and Rod & Custom.
Though successful in every respect, it’s time for the program to be updated. Hence-forth, the young rodder program at all of the NSRA National events will be known as the 29 Below program, and our young participating members with a valid driver’s license up to and including the age of 29, with their own street rod registered in their name for the event, will be eligible to take part in this activity. Vintage Air will continue as the sponsor, and each young rodder that brings his or her street rod to the special area on the grounds at the designated time will receive a commemorative T-shirt provided by the sponsor, and will be eligible for a special drawing for two of the Super Prizes from Vintage Air.
The 29 Below program, like the preceding Under 21 program, will help to give exposure to the young street rodders that attend the NSRA events, creating public awareness that this is not a hobby for just the grey-haired auto enthusiasts. Street rodders come in all sizes, shapes and are of all ages, and the NSRA 29 Below program will serve to make that better understood. If you are eligible to be a participant, please join the fun ...and if you don’t qualify to be part of this activity, visit the area where it is being staged and learn first hand that the youth involvement in street rodding is very real and very exciting, and we know the enthusiasm of these street rodders is sure to be felt.
